Meeting Sustainable Schools targets
Aims:
• Clarify what the key “Sustainable Schools Targets” are
• Identify how we will meet and improve on the targets
• To identify any challenges/barriers to meeting targets
• Identify how this can be integrated into the curriculum and engage students

The impact of Managed Learning Environments on attainment and achievement
A discussion of how an MLE or Learning Platform can be utilised to provide the greatest benefit to continuous improvement in teaching and learning. We will consider what is meant by a Learning Platform, what steps should be taken for a successful implementation and current evidence for success in schools.

This workshop is facilitated by Ralph Ellis, Educational Consultant, RM, and Dave McCallam, ICT Adviser, Transform Schools.

Food in Education - how can we influence children to eat well?
We can make healthy and nutritious food available, but how can we influence children to eat well?
This workshop looks at the whole school food policy and will discuss how we can overcome the key challenges for effective implementation.

This workshop is facilitated by Amanda Stannard, Food Services Director, Haden Building Management Limited, and Rob Rees MBE.

Research and Development priorities for Local Authorities
This session will consider what the research and development priorities of the private sector should be if it is to serve the Local Authority schools market effectively?

Starting with an overview of current Balfour Beatty Education and RM research and design programmes, delegates will then be asked to help brainstorm potential future key research areas for Balfour Beatty Education. Once identified, delegates will prioritise them and help design a research project for 2009, which will be reported back on at the next Transform Schools Conference.

Welcome to the 2008 Transform Schools Partners Conference website

This years’ conference will explore the link between the learning environment and improvements in attainment, achievement and aspiration. It will examine how improved educational facilities can help build pupils confidence and self-esteem and look at how education delivery is changing to deliver better results.

It will ask:

- What is continuous improvement?
- How do you measure continuous improvement?
- What is existing good practise and how can it be built upon?
- What are the lessons learnt?
- How can we work in partnership to facilitate effective communications?

The agenda includes keynote speakers and workshops, and time is included in the agenda for delegates to network and share ideas.

Its’ aim is to bring together Transform Schools staff, clients and customers to share ideas and knowledge, to enable delegates to identify improvements they can make back in the classroom or workplace.

Food in Education Workshop Facilitator
Amanda Stannard is Food Services Director for Balfour Beatty WorkPlace, (formerly Haden Building Management), where she is responsible for supporting the business in delivering foodservice excellence.

After graduating in Hospitality Management, Amanda spent fifteen years in the foodservice industry. This has included being involved in developing foodservice standards in schools and colleges.

Amanda is committed to improving the consumption of healthy food in (and out) of our schools.

The impact of Managed Learning Environments on attainment and achievement Workshop Facilitator

Ralph works for RM as an Educational Consultant, which mostly involves supporting school staff with learning how to use and implement various educational applications, including RM's Learning Platform. Ralph is currently supporting the Future Schools in Knowsley project with the adoption of a Learning Platform, as well as other school staff 'e-confidence' activities. Ralph’s background is in education. Prior to joining RM, he taught Maths at a secondary level for six years, including a role as Head of Department and a short stint teaching in Auckland.

Gareth Long

Gareth Long, Education Group Leader

Research and Development Workshop Facilitator

Gareth acts as Education Group Leader within Balfour Beatty Capital focusing on education aspects of BSF bids.

Originally a drama teacher, he spent many years in the classroom ending up as a ‘trouble shooting’ Headteacher of several schools, mainly in London. Until a few months ago Gareth worked as Strategic Development Advisor (Education) to the Minister of Education in the Cayman islands where he was deeply involved with every aspect of a rapid holistic transformation of the entire education system. He led many effective large scale initiatives, including work on the design of ‘cutting edge’ new secondary and primary learning environments.

Gareth has worked extensively with some of the world’s leading authorities to propel education into the 21st century, including Professor Stephen Heppell, Prakash Nair, and many other leading architects specializing in school design from both the United States and Canada.

Nicola Williams, Sustainability & Quality manager, Balfour Beatty Capital

'Meeting Sustainable Schools Targets' Workshop Facilitator

Nicola joined Balfour Beatty Capital in 2007, as Sustainability and Quality Manager and in her role is responsible for the management, monitoring and improvement of environmental and quality management systems. Advice is provided to PFI concessions and non-PFI asset companies on sustainability and environmental matters. She has over five years experience as an environmental practitioner, a project manager and a trainer from work as a consultant and on European and Government funded environmental, health and safety projects.

Nicola is a registered environmental auditor and associate member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment and an affiliate member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.

By Car: MOSI is located on Liverpool Road in Castlefield, minutes from Manchester city centre. It is clearly signposted from all main routes into the city - simply follow the brown tourist signs. The nearest motorways are the M602 and the M60.

If you have indicated on your booking form that you would like parking you will have a space reserved. Upon arrival at the venue the car park attendant will take your name and confirm your space. The car park entrance is situated on Lower Byrom Street adjacent to the Museum main entrance just off Liverpool Road.

By Train: Nearest railway station - Deansgate. It is a five minute walk from Deansgate to MOSI.
Deansgate station is serviced by direct rail services from Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Oxford Road railway stations.

By Tram: Nearest Metrolink (tram) station - G-Mex. It is a five minute walk from G-Mex to MOSI.
G-Mex is serviced by Metrolink trams from Manchester city centre, Manchester Victoria railway station and other parts of Greater Manchester.

By Bus: Bus No 33 from Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester city centre stops outside MOSI on Liverpool Road.

'Research and Development priorities for Local Authorities' Workshop Facilitator

Chris was appointed Managing Director for UK PFI bidding at Balfour Beatty in January 2006, and as such is responsible for securing new business for Transform Schools, Consort Healthcare and Connect Roads. He leads a team of 45 staff.

Chris is chair of the PPP Forum Education Group.

Chris’ enthusiasm for equality of opportunity in education, and the facilities required to support this, stem in part from his own life experiences: he attended a primary school where over 50% of the pupils were eligible for free school meals, yet thanks to the efforts of some exceptional and inspiring teachers, he took a senior scholarship and a first in Engineering from Trinity College, Cambridge.

Rob Rees, The Cotswold Chef

'Food in education' Workshop Facilitator

Rob Rees became involved in diet and public health projects through his work as a food consultant, chef and former restaurateur and is now one of the UK’s leading campaigners for a better food culture in Britain. He works with central government, regional development agencies, local authorities, schools, communities and the food industry as a powerful inspiration to the benefits of good food and associated food policies. He balances social aspects of his work with his private interests of consultant, cookery demonstrator, food columnist, writer and chef. He is a real charmer and an inspiration to all who listen from child to adult.

Rob has actively campaigned around issues on education, health, nutrition, food safety and consumer issues for many years and is often featured in local, regional and national media. Whilst on the Board of the Food Standards Agency he championed the needs of young people in consumer issues around food, and then became involved in setting up the School Food Trust where he is still a Board Member. As an ambassador for Visit Britain and Board Member of Visit England, he manages the marketing strategy for an £85billion industry, as well as promoting British food and culture through talks, demonstrations and cookery sessions. This has taken him on projects around the globe, including India, Singapore, Japan, Australia, Europe and the USA, celebrating the assets of the Cotswolds, South West and UK. In recognition of his work in this area, Rob won the “Image of Britain” award in 2006 (Food from Britain award, sponsored by Visit Britain).

Rob is also General Governor for the British Nutrition Foundation, Member of the FSA’s Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food, Policy Director for Gloucestershire Food Vision, Chairman of Kraft’s Health4Schools project and a Non Executive Director of the Gloucestershire Primary Care Trust. Rob is also CEO of The Wiggly Worm Ltd (a food education and health development charity) and Director of The Cotswold Chef™. Rob has particular skills in facilitating organisational change, focussing on changes in attitudes and behaviours, policy development and delivery, and customer engagement. His work ranges from local level to the international stage with a wealth of experience, skills and positive results.

In January 2006, Rob was awarded an MBE for services to the “Food Industry”.

Dave McCallam

'The impact of Managed Learning Environments on attainment and achievement' Workshop Facilitator

David has a varied experience in the education sector. During his career with the Royal Navy he taught Electronics and Mechanical Engineering to Naval Artificers and since leaving in 1991 has taught in secondary schools, designed and developed a City Learning Centre and worked as a content developer for use within Virtual Learning Environment’s and Learning Management Systems.

During this time he supported schools and colleges worldwide to help educators understand the potential of online systems and to apply them effectively within an education setting. From 2001 to 2005 David was part of the Excellence in Cities team in Hull and in particular developed ICT systems and innovative solutions with ICT to help raise attainment in Hull, which recently exceeded all expectations and targets.

During this time he played a major role in the strategic implementation of ICT and ICT systems in schools and in the planning stages for BSF. and in particular leading the Creative and Media specialist diploma sub group.

David joined Transform Schools to work closely with bid teams and to advise on the relationship between design, ICT and the transformational schools agenda.

Ed Bartlett, Whole Life Cost Director, Balfour Beatty Capital

'Meeting Sustainable Schools targets' Workshop Facilitator

Ed has 12 years experience in the industry mainly working in the PFI/PPP sector. Ed has worked for some of the UK’s leading consultancies in the market including BPG, BRE, Faithful & Gould and Cyril Sweett and to date he has advised on over 75 PFI projects in the health, education, housing, defence and transport sectors. He is a member of the British Institute of Facilities Management, holds an MSc in Life Cycle Costing, sits on BSI / ISO / EU research panels and is an internationally recognised published expert in the discipline.

Ed has wide ranging experience in working as a PFI/PPP technical advisor to the public sector, banks and contractors. He joined Balfour Beatty Capital in 2006 managing and developing whole life costs for bids and operational projects. Most notable recent achievements have been included developing life cycle funds for Enniskillen Hospital, Knowsley Schools and the M25 DBFO PPP. Other key experience prior to joining included developing the life cycle funds for two of the industries most complex deals including Barts & The London Hospital and Allenby and Connaught MoD PFI’s as well as working on PPP in Australia, Spain, Portugal, Czech Republic and Germany.

As Whole Life Cost Director, Ed’s key responsibilities include:

Leading the whole life cycle costing elements of bids to determine and model the most appropriate and robust life cycle costs
Development of life cycle procurement strategies and sustainability solutions for projects which have included the use of leading edge renewable technologies
Development of portfolio wide life cycle management processes and techniques for an operating life cycle fund in excess of £800m running over the next 40 years

Dr. Julie Madigan

Dr Julie Madigan, Chief Executive, The Manufacturing Institute

Julie Madigan joined The Manufacturing Institute in June 1995 and was appointed Chief Executive in March 1996.

Julie oversaw the development of the Manufacturing Institute from this time, building the customer base, developing all of the product and service offerings, building a strong brand and reputation and establishing the Institute as the first of the Regional Centres for Manufacturing Excellence in the UK. In 2001 the Institute began to deliver the Manufacturing Advisory Service for the North West region. In 2003 the Agenda for Change in North West Manufacturing was launched, targeted to drive over £400 million of quality, cost and delivery improvements in the manufacturing base. Since 1995 the Institute has worked in over 4,000 manufacturing companies and over 30,000 manufacturers have attended educational programmes focused on driving productivity.

She was previously MRPII Project Leader for Ciba Pharmaceuticals in Europe, based in Switzerland, with responsibility for supply chain integration covering three new focused factories and ten European demand streams. Prior to this, Julie was Project Manager for the UK Pharmaceutical Division’s Class A MRPII implementation. She began her career at Ciba in sales, after which she moved into marketing on an accelerated development programme. Julie has a BSc and PhD in Biochemistry and a Master’s degree in Business Administration.

Russell Andrews

Russell Andrews, Director of Education & Planning, PfS

Russell Andrews became Director of Education and Planning at Partnerships for Schools in May 2006. Russell oversees a team of education directors, ICT advisers and sports advisers responsible for selecting and supporting local authorities through their first year in the Building Schools for the Future programme as they bring together their education and estate strategy for BSF.

Prior to joining PfS Russell was Assistant Director of Education in Nottingham City Council where he had responsibility for Standards and Effectiveness and for Schools Requiring Support and Intervention from 2002. Over that period he had oversaw the development of Nottingham’s strategy for raising standards in its secondary schools.

Russell’s career has also included posts in Leicester and Bury LEA’s where he worked on improvement strategies with primary and secondary schools. In each case he had responsibility for a range of LEA initiatives including 14-19 curriculum, English as an additional language and Science.

Russell taught for 16 years in urban secondary schools in West Yorkshire gaining valuable senior management experience over that period and retains a strong interest in the challenges of raising standards in the inner-city context.
